BUNG TOMO



         Bung Tomo or Sutomo was born in Surabaya, East Java on October 3, 1920 precisely in Blauran Village, in the center of Surabaya.His father's name is Kartawan Tjiptowidjojo, a family head from the middle class.he attended school at MULO (Meer Uitgebreid Lager Onderwijs), which isequivalent to junior highschool However, at the age of 12 he was forced to leave his education at MULO.he completed his HBS (Hogereburgerschool) school education through correspondence, but never officially graduated. Then he joined KBI (Kepanduan Bangsa Indonesia), Soetomo
Soetomo emphasized the philosophy of scouting, coupled with the nationalist awareness he gained from this group and from his grandfather, was a good substitute for formal education.
At the age of 17, he became famous when he succeeded in becoming the second person in the Dutch East Indies to reach the Pandu Garuda rank. Before the Japanese occupation in 1942, this rank was only achieved by three Indonesian people. Sutomo was once a successful journalist. Then he joined political and social groups. When he was elected in 1944 to become a member of the Japan-sponsored New People's Movement, almost no one knew him.

              But all this prepared Sutomo for his very important role, when in October and November 1945, he became one of the Leaders who inflame and lift the spirit of Surabaya's people.
At that time Surabaya was completely attacked by NICA soldiers. Sutomo is particularly remembered for his opening exclamations in his radio broadcasts which were full of emotions. Even though Indonesia lost the Battle , this event was still recorded as one of the most important events in the history of Indonesian Independence.




                 On October 7, 1981 Soetomo passed away in Padang Arafah, while on a pilgrimage. Unlike the tradition to bury the pilgrims who died in pilgrimage to the holy land. Bung Tomo's body was brought back to the country and buried not in a Heroes Cemetery, but at the Ngagel Public Cemetery in Surabaya.
